Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Children can develop their learning skills through fun and interactive games. By playing games, it can add life to the subject that they're learning and at the same time improve their thinking skills. Below are 2 very interesting mathematics games that we are very sure can help enrich your child's mind leaving them wanting for more each time after they are done playing! Plus, these games do not have to be installed into your PC! There are links to the games and you can start playing simply by just clicking the link at the bottom of each game :)
The first game is called the Pattern Matcher.
Public Broadcasting System (PBS) Parents has come up with this game to help preschoolers from age 4-5 years old learn matching in a more advanced environment compared to the usuals like worksheets and activity books. This allows them to play and learn at the same time allowing for different perspectives in learning. This activity comprises of pictures that are familiar to children such as the octopus, the snake and the cat. The pictures are also made up of an array of colours to capture their attention thus promoting interest in playing the game. In addition to this, a catchy background music keeps children excited and this makes the activity more interesting.
The game also offers level 1 and 2. This is beneficial because it can then cater to children that wants to play something that is simple, and also to the ones that would want it more challenging.
In our opinion, this is very much quite a simple yet challenging game for young children. Children are to match the pictures from the orange rods to look like what it is on the blue rod as shown in the screenshot above by clicking the 2 correct pictures in order. The difference in the colour of the rods can let children differentiate with ease.
Each time a child matches wrongly, he/she will be prompted to try again with a "Retry" button in the same prompt box for the child to re-match with ease.
Of course, if the child gets it right, he/she will be praised with words like "Congratulations" and "Bravo". Words like these helps one to feel more confident knowing that he/she has successfully matched the pictures in the game.
There are also useful parent pointers to assist parents on what to do in encouraging the child to have fun while playing the game. This could also lead to close bondings and tighten the relationship between a parent and the child as it allows for both parties to spend quality time together.

The second game is called Fishin' Mission.
In relation to being developmentally appropriate like the Pattern Matcher game above, Kaboose TM has created this fantastic fishing game that helps preschoolers from age 4-5 years old learn counting and differentiate various types of colour.
This helps fine-tune children's eye-hand coordination as well. As soon as the child clicks "Go", he/she will be directed to an instruction window made up of simple sentences that helps children to comprehend easily.
There are 5 levels to this game, of which children would be promoted to a new level each time they have successfully completed the assigned task for each level. Each level compromises of a different challenge starting from something simple and as the level goes up, the challenges rise. The screenshot below would be level one, whereby a child only has to catch 5 fishes of the same kind. There is also a timer at the top left hand corner of the game for children to keep track of the time in completing the task. We believe that the amount of time given is sufficient for each child to think and complete the level.
If the child manages to do the assigned task, he/she will be awarded with words of praises such as 'You Are A Star' or 'Fantastic'. This will help boost their confidence and self-esteem which in turn benefit the child's well-being and by feeling so, it will help them develop interest in learning.
The second level requires a child to catch the specific type of fish as there would be a mixture of 2 types of fishes in the sea. This is slightly challenging but the numerals are small thus it is developmentally appropriate for preschoolers of this age.
If children catch the wrong type/number of fish, the net will break and the child will be asked to try again in attempting to complete the task.
As the level goes higher, the number of fishes in the sea will eventually increase, adding complexity for the child.
As for the last level, there would be more than just 2 types of fish for the children to identify before catching.
When the child has successfully completed all 5 levels, the 'fisherman' will again praise the child with rewarding words like "Great Job!" together with a catchy phrase that will make the child want to play and learn Math interactively.
